Sisters of Mercy show in Boston - November....?

There appears to be some confusion surrounding the upcoming Sisters of Mercy show at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston.

The Wilbur's site, Ticketmaster and a few other sources say that it's on Saturday, November 1st. At Heroes on Saturday night, they were advertising a flyer with November 11th as the date.

I *could* go on the 11th but I *can't* go on the 1st. I suspect that the flyer at Heroes is the one that's incorrect, which bums me out.

Anyone know the truth?

Baby Dee is headed out on tour supporting her most recent release "Safe Inside the Day" (Drag City) which was produced by Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney, with guest appearances by Will, Matt, Andrew WK, John Contreras, etc. She has collaborated with Antony and the Johnsons and is an active member of Current 93 and Marc Almond's touring bands. She has performed in circuses, and been a successful NYC street performer (playing harp while riding a tricycle, dressed as a bear and alternately as a bee). Baby Dee is an amazing story teller, performer and entertainer. Her songs suck you in and take you on a journey. Could be a dirty journey...but we like that.

M.G. Lederman is the songwriting outlet for Mel Lederman, formerly one of the creative forces behind Victory at Sea, a Boston based band formed in the mid 90's that spent 10 solid years touring throughout Europe and the U.S. supporting multiple releases. After Victory at Sea split up in late 2006 Mel began working on the collection of songs that would become "Codes", his first release under the name M.G. Lederman.

Mel's lonesome baritone, reminiscent of Leonard Cohen or Eric Bachman, is the focal point of these songs along with his easily recognizable piano playing. A lot of what you find on "Codes" seems to revolve around sadness and sorrow only, the songs dealing with situations of deep loneliness, writing drunken text messages and a lot of bad news. Yet there is a spark of humor that's sure to help make your day if you're not feeling so well. Musically, "Codes" shows a departure from Victory at Sea's Indie Rock and takes up influences from the darker side of American songwriting. "Codes" gives you the - possibly familiar - feeling of hanging out at the bar getting drunk with your friends, knowing there is a good chance you're gonna wake up feeling like shit in the morning.

Mel plays piano in The Thalia Zedek Band, also from Boston. And will be on tour with both bands in the end of 2008.

I am (sort of) ashamed. My newest earworm is JZ's fault. It's the only song on my ipod that can make me look around sheepishly and turn the volume down so no one can hear any possible leakage from hy headphones. But it's absolutely retarded how much I love this song. I think it's because it's in Romanian, which makes me a little melty. ;)

It's called "Dragostea din Tei" by O-Zone, but you might know it as "The Numa Numa Dance" or "The Numa Numa Song." Apparently, it was an internet phenomenon that I missed out on, but heard at Arisia in 2007 (and 2008). More info here.

Oingo Boingo's "Flesh & Blood" mashes amazingly with Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" *and* "Back in Time" from Huey Lewis and the News.

Figures on a Beach, "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" and Nitzer Ebb's "Join in the Chant" also work amazingly well. You could even flavor in a little "Headhunter (Apop mix)" from Front 242 for added fun.

Hey, they don't call me "Eclectic Avatar" for nothing, you know.

I don't know if this happens to any of you other DJ types, but there are times when everything just flows. The music all rhymes and your brain makes connections that make you go, "Oh my god, that's amazing! I kick ass!"

Tickets to see just abut everything you'd want to are $123, and you can take a bus from Boston to Montreal for the meager cost of $80. Or, if you want to go and would split the cost of a car with me, I'll happily drive.

According to the US Passport sites, visitors coming by land or sea do NOT need a passport for Canada, still. If flying, you need one, but otherwise, a birth certificate and picture ID are all you need. This isn't expected to change until 2009, but I may apply for a passport, just to be safe.

Yes, I *think* I'm going. Hell, I'd go for This Morn' Omina, alone. The other bands and friends in the city are just bonuses. ;) I'd better start saving vacation time and money!

PHOOEY! I love this band/project.

According to a post made on January 4th 2008 on the official Neuroticfish MySpace page the German band will cease to exist after its performance at the 2008 edition of the Wave Gothic Treffen festival in Leipzig (GER). Neuroticfish is the solo project of Sascha Mario Klein who released his first album "No Instruments" in 1999, which was released for the first time in the USA in 2006. The band's last studio output was the 2005 album "Gelb".

Not that this means the end of Klein's musical activities because also added in the post is the following comment: "Although this project will be closed after the WGT, we are currently working on some new songs to be released along." Neurotic Fish gained notoriety after one of the songs contained the sample "Electronic body music is dead", also the name of band's official website.

Wolfsheim news

Solo album for Wolfsheim singer Peter Heppner

Peter Heppner, the frontman of the German synthpop outfit Wolfsheim, will release a first solo-album later in 2008 through Warner Music Germany. The news was announced by the official Peter Heppner fanclub on December 24th, when the website went online. For Heppner it will be the first time he goes completely solo after having collaborated with such artists as Girl Under Glass, Umbra Et Imago, Joachim Witt, Schiller, Goethes Erben, Alice II, Paul van Dyk, Milu & Kim Sanders and with Jose Alvarez Brill.

The other part of the Wolfsheim duo, Markus Reinhardt, is still enjoying his 'normal' life during which he composed 20 new songs on which he is currently working with a number of international singers and producers. And it won't be a surprise when we say that there is no news at all on when we can see another Wolfsheim album. The band's last output was in 2003 when they released "Casting Shadows", their seventh album.

Patricia Hernandez – "Ancient Shadows" – CD

Absolutely breathtaking.

Ancient Shadows is the debut album for Spanish ethereal/goth singer-songwriter and fantasy illustrator, Priscilla Hernandez. Refusing offers from several major labels, Hernandez has released the album on her own label, Yidneth.

Your iTunes application will claim that the album belongs to the “New Age” category, simply because anything that defies classification tends to be labeled that way. This is music for fans of everything from trip-hop acts like Hungry Lucy, New Age acts like Enigma, goth acts like Dead Can Dance and sirens like Sarah Brightman and Loreena McKennitt. There’s something here for everyone that can appreciate the beauty and grace of the female voice. Hernandez has incredible range and ability to evoke a dreamy and soothing state of mind with themes of love, loss, longing and magic both in our world and in those that lie just beyond ours.

If for nothing else, the album is well worth purchasing for the artwork. Hernandez is a talented artist whose favorite subjects are fairies, ghosts and angels. The pages of the digipak are full of illustrations for the chilling and sorrowful stories she’s telling with her music. It’s a perfect blend of talents, creating a fairytale world in which her characters come to life. With lyrics in both Spanish and English and stories behind each track, the booklet is as delightful as the album.

In most reviews, I’ll pick highlights from the album that will resonate with the largest number of listeners, but after several listens, I’m having a hard time doing that, frankly. Out of 19 tracks, I think there might be all of 4 that aren’t immediately standouts. My personal favorites are, “Away,” “The Call of the Nymph,” “The Realms of Twilight,” “Lament,” and the all too short instrumental, “Fairytale”

A sad day in music, as I learned of two deaths in my little corner of fandom. My heart goes out to their friends and families, especially to G.P.O.

Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge dead
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has announced the unexpected passing of band member Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge. Lady Jaye apparently died suddenly on Tuesday 9th October 2007 at home in Brooklyn, New York from a previously undiagnosed heart condition which is thought to have been connected with her long-term battle with stomach cancer. Lady Jaye collapsed and died in the arms of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Genesis and the other surviving band members of Psychic TV/PTV3 immediately decided to cancel their current tour. The group, who have been touring to promote their first studio album in 12 years, will announce future plans after an appropriate period of mourning.

Paul Raven - Bass player with Killing Joke, Ministry, Prong Dies in Geneva at Age 46
Paul Raven, Bass player with Killing Joke, has died unexpectedly in Geneva in the early hours of Saturday October 20th 2007. Paul had been recording with Ted Parsons and Marco Neves in Geneva for the band Treponem pal. After a days recording Paul retired to bed and did not wake up.

Although Killing Joke was his life passion playing on hits such as Love Like Blood and Kings and Queens, Paul was also a prolific musician in other areas. At various times in his life he played and wrote with Ministry, Godflesh, Prong, Pigface, Murder Inc, Amen and many others. Killing Joke have been covered by everyone from Metallica, Foo Fighters, Fear factory, Helmet to Nouvelle Vague and LCD Soundsystem. Paul a native of Wolverhampton started his musical journey with local punk legends The Neon Hearts and then Kitsch which he formed with Tyla later of Dogs D'Amour.

I went to see Sxip’s Hour of Charm at the A.R.T., last night.

What a treat! Every performer was an amazingly talented individual (or group, in the Emily Grogan Band’s case) and entertained everyone in the audience with everything from acrobatics to keening folk songs about September 11th.

The most amazing performer, in my opinion, was Sxip Shirey, himself. He did an incredible piece that you can see, here. HO-LY SHITE. An audiophile's wet dream. Hell, a foleyphile's wet dream, really. He makes melodic noises with a variety of weird items and instruments.

As many of you know, I’ve been really into ambient, post-industrial, apocalyptic weirdness for a few years, now. This guy BLEW ME AWAY. Seriously. Strange Fortune should be carrying his stuff, though I’m sure they don’t know that, yet.

Check out the press page for what other people have said about him. I find it hard to describe the experience. I felt like I felt the first time I saw Psychic TV. I was wide-eyed, naïve, untalented, entranced and delighted to be seeing someone do such incredible things with… what the hell modified instrument is he playing, again?! Simply incredible. If you get a chance to go, do it. If only for the chance to see Sxip. Also, I’m told that if you go tonight at 10pm and say, “Oh, yeah, I know Mandy,” otherwise known as journeystar, or “Mandy sent me,” you’ll get in for free. Martyn Bates - "Migraine Inducers"

SOMEONE ELSE'S REVIEW:

Martyn Bates later became better known as half of Eyeless in Gaza together with Peter Becker. (His solo career is still going very strong, today)
"Migraine Inducers" was originally released on Cassette in 1979 on Pure Noise Tapes. For younger listeners this may be hard listening to due to the sound quality but this is also which make this release charming.

Getting back to Migraine Inducers: Sometimes you hear parts that could fit into the music of Eyeless in Gaza but Migraine Inducers is more fragmentary and industrial in approach. You can compare it to some parts of Pale Hands I Loved So Well one of Eyeless in Gaza more experimental outputs or some early Nurse With Wound stuff. The music is mostly instrumental and sometimes even melodic but most of the time there are just pieces of music or noise with no begin and no end. It is nice to hear how the music is made and how Martyn bates took this influences into more song structured music as in Eyeless in Gaza.

Bates is experimenting a lot with sound, structure, rhythm and source. When you try to see this as a product from the seventies this is pretty much radical in the vein of for example Throbbing Gristle. This definitely is not an easy album and will grow only slowly. You better consume parts of it while listening in once is just too hard. Dosing this record in little bits it is an enigmatic release with some great stuff on it. This is lo-fi industrial and this is a warning for those who are used to temporary sound quality only.

Not only does this hurt my brain but it kind of makes me love both artists *that* much more. I also really wish that I could go to that show. But the ticket alone will be pricey, then there's a ZipCar, then there's parking said ZipCar in NYC. Or there's a hotel room and bus fare.
